What politicians can learn from Tony Gwynn

Today, meet Carl DeMaio, a 39 year-old former city councilman and an openly gay Republican. DeMaio is running against incumbent Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.), in a race that is considered a toss-up by the Cook Political Report.

DeMaio, who has branded himself as a “New Generation Conservative,” was a top recruit for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

In 2012, DeMaio narrowly lost his bid for mayor of San Diego to former Rep. Bob Filner (D). He declined to run after Filner’s tenure as mayor ended abruptly following allegations of sexual misconduct and instead opted to run for Congress.
