Rick Santorum, spoiler

An informal survey of my Democratic friends reveals that their two favorite TV shows are “Downton Abbey” and the Republican primaries. Last night’s episode of the latter was a corker. Just when we thought Mitt Romney was about to get his rightful inheritance, the quintessential downstairs servant of the right, Rick Santorum, staked his claim.

You knew it was going to be a bad night for Mitt when his campaign put out a memo well before the polls had even closed explaining away the losses. It is an interesting read because it shows you how Romney believes the rest of the season will play. Problem: He isn’t writing the scripts. The Republican primary voters are, and they just don’t want the drama to end, at least not with Mr. Romney in charge.

Last night couldn’t have been more entertaining or unexpected — at least just a few short weeks ago. Instead of a complex plot line with other characters — Gingrich and Paul — complicating the story, Rick Santorum will get his full star turn. Democrats can’t wait for the next show.
