Santorum made the right decision

Rick Santorum made the right decision today for his political future.

He was on a clear path to lose his home state, an outcome that would have weakened his short-term leverage and his long-term political viability. Now, he is in a stronger position to influence — even demand — actions by Republican front-runner Mitt Romney, from the relatively minor, his convention speaking slot, to the more important, the content of the Republican Party platform.

Into the future — Santorum is relatively young — he can look forward to a pole position in 2016, if, as now seems quite possible, Mitt Romney loses.
