Supreme Court decision gives new life to President Obama

Wow. A huge and unexpected win for the president as the Supreme Court maintains essentially the entirety of the new health-care law. According to SCOTUSblog (http://www.scotusblog.com/2012/06/live-blog-of-the-health-care-decision-sponsored-by-bloomberg-law/), “The bottom-line: the entire ACA is upheld, with the exception that the federal government’s power to terminate states’ Medicaid funds is narrowly read.” Chief Justice John Roberts saves Obamacare in a 5-4 decision with Roberts joining the majority.

As I said yesterday, this decision is critical not only to President Obama’s chances for reelection but for his legacy. A reversal would have made him look weak and ineffectual; this victory not only is sweet vindication for the president but gives him new life. Certainly, the Republicans now have another rallying cry for their base, but nothing succeeds in politics like success.

As the decision came down, I was watching CNN and SCOTUSblog. CNN embarrassed  itself by reporting incorrectly that the mandate was thrown out (http://www.buzzfeed.com/zekejmiller/cnn-gets-obamacare-decision-wrong). SCOTUSblog was accurate from the beginning. Check it out for some great follow-up analysis.
