What’s in Romney’s return?

I agree with Ed that President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment is a haunt with staying power. The Republicans have already released a pretty good ad on the topic, and there will be more to come. Of course, the comment is out of context, and the president’s statement is being interpreted in the most negative light . . . blah, blah, blah . . . but it’s fair game.

And so it is annoying — to Republicans anyway — to focus on Mitt Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns. While I would be extremely surprised if Romney paid no taxes, as some have suggested, I do believe his tax returns will reveal that his tax rate is low and enabled by actions that will reinforce voters’ view of a guy who games the system. In this sense, the tax returns would complete Obama’s attempted encirclement of Romney: out-of-touch rich guy with tax policies designed to help his Zip codes, which were already paying less in a time of exploding deficits and a shrinking middle class.
