A renewed road for new Arlington park

This post has been updated.

The most expensive park in Arlington history just got $979,500 more expensive.

The County Board unanimously approved a motion to pay Donahoe Construction that much to rebuild the decrepit Long Bridge Drive, formerly Old Jefferson Davis Highway, alongside the new Long Bridge Park.

The reconstruction is needed because Dominion Virginia Power and Verizon are months behind in removing overhead power lines, county officials said. Those lines will be buried in a duct underneath the road .

Dominion Virginia Power said Thursday that it finished its portion of the project on time.

The county may seek reimbursement from the utility companies.

Arlington has spent $36 million on the park and it’s not finished yet, although soccer teams are playing there and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Nov. 5. An aquatics and fitness center is still to be built.
