Sometimes the whole April Fools thing can really backfire. Ask Ron Fitzsimmons, an assistant to Fairfax Supervisor Gerry Hyland (D-Mt. Vernon). Or former assistant.
According to the stellar Potomac News.com, on April 1 Fitzsimmons posted to his Facebook page, called “Mount Vernon News,” that the adult video and novelty chain MVC was looking to buy a building that currently houses a Safeway in the Hollin Hall area of Mount Vernon.
Hey, April 1 here. Gerry Connolly did it and nobody fired him.
But the Mt. Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce complained, according to the Potomac News, and Fitzsimmons apologized, took the post down, and on Sunday he resigned. A spokesman for Hyland said the supervisor didn’t ask for the resignation.
