If you’re a 12-year-old at Woodbridge Middle School and they told you Usher was coming to perform Friday, you’d be incredibly pumped. And when a group of local dignitaries, ex-Redskins and WPGC radio staff are there, but Usher never appears, you’re going to be pretty crushed.
So there are about 1,038 devastated sixth- , seventh- and eighth-graders moping around Woodbridge, Lake Ridge and Dale City right now, because they waited and waited during the school’s day-long School of Excellence pep rally, and Usher never showed.
Turns out someone in the school, whose name was not released by Prince William schools spokesman Ken Blackstone, thought he had arranged for the mega-popular R&B singer to appear at Woodbridge on Friday. A spokesman for Jive Records, Usher’s record company, said Friday that no one had ever confirmed that Usher would appear in Woodbridge.
“We apologize for the misunderstanding,” Blackstone said. “Usher was unaware of this. Our staff member apparently was dealing with somebody who was not an authorized representative. We want the public to know Usher did not dis the kids.” And, Blackstone added, “by all accounts, the kids were very disappointed.”
Here’s what might have been, if Woodbridge Middle School had lasers and a really sweet video system:
