John A. Payton, of NAACP Legal Defense Fund dies

John A. Payton, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, has died, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous has confirmed for The Root. He was 65.

NAACP Legal Defense Fund President and Director John Payton. (Alex Brandon - ASSOCIATED PRESS) Payton passed away suddenly on Thursday afternoon at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore after a brief illness, a spokesman for the LDF told The Root . No further details were available. He leaves behind a wife, Gay McDougall.
