National leaders to speak at Troy Davis funeral

National leaders and activists will assemble in Savannah, Ga., on Saturday to bury Troy Davis. NAACP president Benjamin Jealous is expected to speak at the funeral.

Davis was convicted on the 1989 shooting death of police office Mark Allen McPhail, who had been coming to the aid of a homeless man.

Davis’created a global outcry that has not ended even though he was executed a week ago. Democrats and Republicans questioned whether he was actually the killer and several who implicated him later recanted.

Davis maintained his innocence right up to the end.

In his final moments, as Davis was strapped to a gurney in the death chamber, he nodded slightly to his attorney, and then made a statement saying he was not responsible for the 1989 slaying of Mark MacPhail. “I am innocent. The incident that happened that night is not my fault,” Davis said.

Many called on President Obama to intervene but he did not.
