Solange has a new music video and Jim Morris is still ripped at 71: This Week in Black Awesomeness

I hate LA Dudes
Issa Rae created the viral Web series “The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl". The series features Rae, who is the creator, writer, main actress and producer. (Bret Hartman - For The Washington Post )

Joy of all joys! You’ve probably already heard the news, but allow me this time to gush. “Awkward Black Girl” Issa Rae is teaming up with Shonda Rhimes (creator of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal”) to crank out a new show for ABC. The upcoming show “I Hate LA Dudes” will be a half-hour sitcom about an L.A. woman’s struggle to navigate the shallow Los Angeles dating waters.

I could not imagine a better team. Rhimes, whose name is quickly becoming synonymous with quality-scripted shows with prominent black characters, with Issa “Ratchetpiece Theatre” Rae? I haven’t been this excited since the seventh Harry Potter book was about to drop.

Bonus: Read The Post’s profile of Issa Rae here.

Black History – All year long.

Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the integration of the University of Mississippi. In 1962, James Meredith caused a stir when he became the first African American student to attend Ole Miss. Today, he hates the term “civil rights.”

He told NewsOne, “When it comes to my rights as an American citizen, and yours, I am a triumphalist and an absolutist. Anything less is an insult.”

He also doesn’t plan to attend any of the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations because he doesn’t see a reason for celebration. In an interview with the Associated Press, he said, “I ain’t never heard of the French celebrating Waterloo. I ain’t never heard of the Germans celebrating the invasion of Normandy, or … the bombing and destruction of Berlin. I ain’t never heard of the Spanish celebrating the destruction of the Armada.”

Read the rest over at NewsOne. Meredith goes on to explain why he chose to attend Ole Miss, which he described as “the holiest temple of White Supremacy in America” during the 1960s. The article also explains the changes the University of Mississippi has undergone in the years since its integration.

Solange put out a new music video. That is all.

I have watched this thing about 10 times since it debuted. Love the song. Love the video. Love her hair. Love it all.

Meet Jim Morris, the 71-year-old black, vegan bodybuilder.

Speaking of muscles, Jim Morris’s muscles have muscles. And he hasn’t eaten any animal products since 1999.

After years of bodybuilding with a diet full of animal protein, Morris met three-time Mr. Universe Bill Pearl in Pasadena, Calif., in 1969. Pearl was a “lacto-ovo vegetarian,” meaning he did not consume meat, but still ate dairy and egg products. Morris became interested in vegetarianism, but was “afraid to mess with a winning formula” and continued to eat meat.

Later, he became a vegetarian, and over the course of 14 years, he was able to become a total vegan. The change helped him get rid of the digestive problems he’d had for years, and he’s still able to put on muscle.

Bonus: U.S. Navy SEAL attempts to break world record for charity.

Here’s a snippet of news I missed last week. U.S. Navy SEAL David Goggins appeared on the “Today Show” Sept. 27 and tried to break the world record for most pull-ups in a day to raise money for families of fallen soldiers. Unfortunately, he didn’t make his goal of 4,020 pull-ups in a single day. He was bested by an arm injury around pull-up number 2,588.

Still, that’s nothing short of amazing. Willing to bet most of us can’t get through 10 pull-ups without our muscles screaming bloody murder.
