Jay Harris joins Demos and The American Prospect

Jay Harris has accepted a joint appointment as publisher of The American Prospect and distinguished senior fellow at Demos, according to a joint announcement from the two organizations.

Harris, the former publisher of Mother Jones magazine for nearly 20 years until 2009, has recently been a media consultant specializing in hybrid business models that support public interest journalism through a combination of commercial and philanthropic revenues.

“Throughout his career in publishing, Jay has shown extraordinary vision and leadership in skillfully navigating a changing media landscape and amplifying the voice of essential independent journalism,” said Miles Rapoport, president of The American Prospect and Demos, in a statement.

Rapoport added that Harris’s “commitment to progressive values combined with his publishing savvy will help move The Prospect to its next level at this critical moment.”

At Demos, Harris will focus on combating the influence corporations have on politics and policy.

Allen McDuffee writes about politics and policy and covered think tanks for The Washington Post from 2011 to 2013. He blogs and hosts a podcast at governmentality.net and is currently working on a book about the influence of think tanks in Washington.
