BET’s ‘Don’t Sleep!’ to become weekly late-night show

Six weeks after the Oct. 1 premiere of “Don’t Sleep!,” BET’s Monday-through-Thursday half-hour late-night strip starring T.J. Holmes, the network announced the show would be “expanded” into a once-a-week, one-hour show, starting this Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 11 p.m. ET.

BET said Monday the change was made because “viewers have spoken,” and due to “overwhelming demand.”

We’re not much at math, but as best we can figure, that’s an expansion from two hours a week, to one hour a week.

“I am excited to have more time to delve into the topics that affect our community, content that will ignite, inspire, educate and empower us as a passionate collective and community,” Holmes, a disciple of this new math, said in Monday’s announcement.

“The election proved people of color are a coveted segment within society with voices that deserve and require platforms and time to be heard so resolve and solutions can be implemented towards greater change.”

Added BET Networks specials and music programming president Stephen G. Hill more enlighteningly, “We love the passion of ‘Don’t’ Sleep!’s’ dedicated audience and hope that the weekly appointment viewing of the show will grow that audience.”

The launch of “Don’t Sleep!” averaged about 400,000 viewers on Oct. 1. And while the Oct. 9 episode approached 1 million viewers, it has never come close to that number since, and subsequent episodes have been known to slip as low as 203,000 viewers. Over its brief run to date, the show is attracting about 50 percent fewer viewers than BET had in the timeslot during the same period a year ago.
