One of the judges on Fox’s flailing singing competition “The X Factor” is actually coming back.
These days, that’s news!
Only 10 weeks after Britney Spears announced she was just too focused on her singing career to return for a second season of judging, and a mere 15 weeks — the gestation period of your average baby lion — after LA Reid announced he too had to get back to his day job, Fox announced Demi Lovato was, for suresies, coming back as the “fan-favorite” judge on the show when it launches its third season in the fall.
“I couldn’t be happier that Demi wants to come back this year,” “X Factor” producer/judge Simon Cowell said in Thursday’s announcement. “Even though she can be really, really annoying — I truly enjoyed working with her and so did the artists.”
Spears and Lovato were hired as mentor/judges for the show’s second season to bolster the ratings after the first season achieved just half the crowd creator Simon Cowell had promised.
Spears and Lovato replaced first-season mentors Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. (First season judge Steve Jones also got the hook, replaced by hosting veteran Mario Lopez and newbie Khloe Kardashian Odom, who entertained the crowds at home by reading from the teleprompter like she was taking the eye test at the DMV.
But Brit in particular failed to deliver. Instead of the erratic-pop-star behavior for which she’s become known and adored by millions, she behaved more like a taxidermied frog with a limited vocabulary — “amazing” and one or two other words.
Naturally, the ratings tumbled even further in the second season, and the show got clobbered by NBC’s singing-competition series, “The Voice.”
