Cedric the Entertainer replaces Meredith Vieira on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’

Cedric Kyles, aka Cedric the Entertainer, is replacing Meredith Vieira as host of Disney’s syndicated game show, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

CtE may not seem the most likely replacement for Vieira, who has hosted the show since its launch as a syndicated weekday program in 2002; she’s leaving at the end of this TV season.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Disney explained, “Cedric The Entertainer is perhaps most widely known for his work on the record-breaking ‘Kings of Comedy’ tour with Steve Harvey, the late Bernie Mac, and D.L. Hughley.”

Translation: Steve Harvey has jump-started “Family Feud” since joining the show as host in 2010; last week, “Feud” clocked its biggest rating ever among women in the 25-to-54-year-old age bracket — a key viewer group for syndicated programming ad sales.

Last week “Feud” for the first time beat “Wheel of Fortune” in that age bracket.

And imitation is the sincerest form of television.

Last week, “Millionaire” averaged 3.3 million viewers; “Feud” averaged nearly 8 million. We rest our case.

“With his deep roots as a successful stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and unpredictable fun to the show,” the president of Disney-ABC’s syndication distribution operation, Janice Marinelli explained.

“It’s going to be a good time every day!!” promised Cedric.
