‘Futurama’ canceled, again

(Comedy Central)
Comedy Central has canceled animated “Futurama” — a decade after it was canceled by the Fox broadcast network.

Tellingly, the basic cable network noted in Monday’s announcement that when the upcoming seventh season, starting June 19, wraps on Sept. 4, the show will have hit 140 episodes.

“I’m very proud of the upcoming season. If this is indeed the end of Futurama, it’s a fantastic finish to a good, long run,” said show creator and executive producer Matt Groening.

First airing on Fox from 1999-2003, the show was then canceled — the first time.

“Futurama” was resuscitated in 2007 with four direct-to-DVD movies. Comedy Central brought the rights to telecast those movies, cut up into half-hour episodes. Based on those ratings, the cable network ordered new seasons, which debuted in June of ’10.
