HLN to launch ‘Evening Express’ on June 4

HLN is plucking its ‘Morning Express with Robin Meade” format to launch a like-minded evening newscast called “Evening Express” hosted by Ryan Smith, on June 4.

“EE,” which will also feature CNN international’s Isha Sesay – you may know her from “AC360’s “360 Bulletin” – and HLN’s personal finance guru Clark Howard, will telecast 5-7 p.m. weeknights. Vinnie Politan is being pushed to daytime, according to press reports.

The show, HLN promises/warns, will take “an energetic, inspirational and solutions-oriented look at the day’s news, accompanied by deeper discussions and reporting on stories and issues that resonate in the American household.” And, by “issues that resonate in the American household, HLN said, they mean “parenting, education, health, personal finance, and relationships.”

In a promo for the show, Howard tells us that, “in spite of [Sesay’s] accent” they, the show’s three on-air people, “are living everyday American life.” Including, apparently -- provincialism.

“Viewers tell us all the time that they love how Robin and the ‘Morning Express’ team start their day on HLN, and now Ryan, Clark and Isha will be welcoming them home in the evening,” HLN general manager Scot Safon said in Tuesday’s news. The program will be based at HLN’s Atlanta set-up.
