Starting this week, actor Lou Diamond Phillips will interview active and retired military officers from a studio in Silver Spring as part of a new Military Channel franchise, WaPoTeam TV’s Emily Yahr reports.

The series, called “An Officer and a Movie” and filmed at an empty store/restaurant area-turned-studio in downtown Silver Spring, will air in short segments during military-themed movies on Friday nights.

First up? “The Great Santini,” the 1979 movie that earned Robert Duvall an Oscar nomination as the very demanding marine pilot who struggles with his family. Throughout the movie, Diamond will talk to retired Marine Col. Arthur Athens for expert commentary.

Military Channel notes that Phillips is the perfect choice to host the series, as he has starred in Gulf War movie “Courage Under Fire,” and is also the son of a Navy officer.

Here’s a preview clip of the series, which debuts Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m.:
