NBC renews ‘Smash’ for a second season

“Smash,” the Broadway-themed drama on NBC, has been renewed for a second season.

The heavily-promoted series stars Debra Messing as one of the producers of a Marilyn Monroe musical and “American Idol” alum Katharine McPhee as one of the contenders for the title role, and has averaged about 7.7 million viewers on Monday nights at 10 p.m. over seven weeks. It’s a definite improvement in the time slot, which had been averaging around 4 million viewers or less this season before “Smash” debuted.

This marks the second pickup of a first-year show for the 2012-2013 TV season from NBC, which announced last week it had given a second-season order to fairy tale drama “Grimm.”
