Oprah Winfrey got her wrists slapped by Nielsen for tweeting a message asking Nielsen homes to switch channels and watch her struggling Oprah Winfrey Network on Grammy night.
“Every 1 who can please turn to OWN especially if u have a Neilsen [sic] box,” Winfrey tweeted Sunday, as OWN debuted a new episode of her interview show, “Oprah’s Next Chapter.”
This is a Nielsen no-no — network suits aren’t supposed to try to influence Nielsen households. In the past, when some such person, or show star, has publicly tried to sway Nielsen homes to watch a particular, the ratings-crunching company has exacted a terrible revenge, deleting that day’s show ratings.
But, of course, in the case of OWN, that wouldn’t necessarily be a punishment. At any rate, the tweet was deleted but the episode’s ratings won’t be, though they will forever have a note attached saying the numbers may be funky.
Meanwhile, even without un-cool tweeting, AMC managed to attract more than 8 million people to its mid-season return of its zombie-dram, “The Walking Dead” Sunday in the teeth of the Grammycast.
