Shirley MacLaine makes ‘Downton’ debut in UK; nearly 9 million watch

Here in the U.S. we have to wait until January to see Shirley MacLaine’s entrance on the third season debut of  “Downton Abbey” on PBS, but in the UK fans got to watch Shirley chew some scenery Sunday, and nearly 9 million of them did.

But that’s off a hair compared to the show’s second season debut, according to various news reports.

Some are blaming “D3’s” leadin which, incredibly, is Simon Cowell’s singing competition series “The X Factor.”

And “X” appears to be having some of the same ratings problems across the Atlantic as it’s having here; on Sunday it pulled in nearly 2 million fewer viewers than same point last year, according to Brit’s Digital Spy.
