Stage play based on ‘I Love Lucy’ heading to Washington

Live Nation announced on Valentine’s Day that the stage adaptation of  “I Love Lucy” – the first scripted TV series shot in front of a studio audience -- is coming to Washington’s Warner Theater on June 1, for a limited run.

“I Love Lucy Live On Stage” is based on the longrunning CBS series that starred film actress Lucille Ball, playing the loopy wife of bandleader/singer Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz), living in a New York City apartment.

The Ricardo’s best friends are the apartment building’s landlord Fred Mertz (William Frawley) and his wife Ethel (Vivian Vance), who are old vaudevillians. “I Love Lucy” ran on CBS from fall of ’51 to May of ’57, and was the country’s most popular show for almost all of its run – it was on top when it bowed out. It was the first scripted TV series to be shot in front of a studio audience.

“I Love Lucy Live on Stage,” which premiered in Los Angeles in 2011, takes its audience back to 1952; they are members of the studio audience awaiting the filming of two well-known “Lucy” episodes.
