A mere 53 films were hand-picked from 1,929 submissions, and the just-announced slate (unsurprisingly) looks promising.

With daytime soaps out of way, ABC’s ‘The Chew’ premieres

ABC's new, one-hour foodie series "The Chew.” (Craig Sjodin - ABC)

“The Chew” debuts this afternoon on ABC stations nationwide – one of two “The View”- esque talk shows the network is trotting out to replace longrunning daytime soaps.

“The Chew,” as its name suggests, is about food, and hopes to cash in on America’s obsession with same.

(In its announcement about the changes, back in April, ABC acknowledged that “as food has become the center of everyone’s life,” ’The Chew’ will “focus on food from every angle — as a source of joy, health, family ritual, friendship, breaking news, dating, fitness, weight loss, travel adventures and life’s moments.”)

The other new show, “The Revolution,” is about trying to take off the weight you’ll put on if you become a fan of “The Chew.”

It’s genius– like having your dealer and your rehab facility under one roof!

“The Revolution” stars, among others, the inimitable Tim Gunn.

“The Chew” stars celebrity chef Mario Batali (Food Network’s “Iron Chef America”), former Silver Spring caterer and Bravo “Top Chef” fan fave Carla Hall, Michael Symon (Food Network’s “Iron Chef America”), “The Dorm Room Diet” author Daphne Oz (aka daughter of “The Oz Show” star Mehmet Oz) and “entertaining expert” Clinton Kelly (TLC’s “What Not to Wear”).

“The Revolution” is from J.D. Roth, the guy who does NBC’s fat-farm reality series “The Biggest Loser.”
