Keller on Romney: Voters ’want to be convinced that he gets them’

“Portraying Mitt Romney as a guy you would invite to your kid’s bar mitzvah is not credible. And in any case it’s not enough. What voters are looking for, I think, is more ineffable. They are looking a combination of moral compass and strength of character. They want to be convinced that he gets them (which is not the same as being one of them), that when the hard choices come at him he will be governed by the right mix of decency and sturdiness, that he can detect the wisdom in the crosswinds of pressure, that they trust his judgment.”

New York Times writer Bill Keller on judging the Republican presidential candidate’s character and moral compass.
