Obama campaign names faith outreach director

The campaign to re-elect President Obama has picked a 23-year-old evangelical to run faith outreach.

The appointment of Michael Wear, an assistant in the small White House office that works with faith-based social service groups, ends consternation by some religious progressives that the campaign slot had not been filled. Since 2008 some religious progressives, including a handful that worked for the Obama campaign, have felt faith concerns and language and image haven’t been high enough priorities for the president’s inner circle.

Wear interned during the 2008 campaign and then joined the White House’s office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, where he is the assistant to director Joshua Dubois.

Wear, a married Buffalo native, has focused on outreach to evangelicals, particularly on the issue of adoption. He worships at the nondenominational National Community Church on Capitol Hill.

The Democratic Party has struggled to make major inroads with religious conservatives, though Obama did gain several points over John Kerry among Catholics and evangelicals.
