Alexandria residents, city council debate waterfront today

More than 100 Alexandria residents who care deeply about the future of the city’s waterfront will testify Saturday at a public hearing before the City Council.

The council planned to vote on whether to accept or reject its controversial staff recommendation. An 11th-hour attempt by opponents to force a supermajority to pass the redevelopment plan could delay a council decision. The planning director who was behind the recommended plan will determine if the supermajority petition is valid.

That’s likely to be the first controversy is a day filled with them. Council insiders expect the hearing to last most of the day.
