Virginia state Sen.Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax) said Thursday that he has decided against running for governor or attorney general next year.
In March, Petersen announced the creation of a leadership PAC and said he intended to run for statewide office. But he remained coy about whether he would run for governor or attorney general, even as an adviser said publicly that Petersen was likely to run for governor.
Now Petersen says he won’t seek either office.
“I’m not running for any statewide office,” he said in a telephone interview. “I thought about it and basically, I didn’t make any grand announcement that I’m going to do it, and I’m not going to make any grand announcement that I’m not going to do it.”
He began telling supporters over the last week that he did not plan to move forward with a campaign. His decision was first reported by the Virginian-Pilot. Petersen confirmed it in an interview with The Post.
“I don't want people to sort of be waiting on me,” Petersen said.
