A pro-Democratic super PAC is wading into Virginia’s contentious Senate race, launching a new ad attacking George Allen (R) and supporting Timothy M. Kaine (D) for their respective records.
Majority PAC, which aims to keep the Senate in Democratic hands, announced Friday that it would air the new spot — “Remember” — in Charlottesville, Richmond and Washington, the same media markets where the pro-Republican Crossroads GPS recently aired an ad attacking Kaine.
The Majority PAC spot says “we still remember” Allen raising spending when he served as governor, and voting for earmarks and increased debt as senator. Kaine, the ad says, cut spending and his own salary when he was governor.
Allen’s campaign criticized what it called a “negative, misleading attack ad,” suggesting it distorted both his record and Kaine’s.
“Tim Kaine’s allies can try to reframe George Allen’s record, but Virginians are looking for a leader with a record of proven pro-job-growth solutions, not the same tax and spend policies Tim Kaine has championed as Governor and as President Obama’s hand-picked Chairman of the Democratic National Committee,” said Allen spokeswoman Emily Davis.
