Former New York Mayor and one-time presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has endorsed former Virginia governor George Allen in his bid to win the U.S. Senate seat he once held.
“These are difficult times for hard-working men and women across our nation, and we need people in Washington that know how to get things done,’’ Giuliani said in a Tuesday announcement. “George Allen has a proven track record of success, and he will bring common sense and conservative solutions to Washington. He will stand strong for his conservative principles and fight every day for what’s best for the people of Virginia.”
Giuliani backed Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Earley in 2001 against Democrat Mark Warner, who won. In 2009, he backed Republican Bob McDonnell, who won the governor’s race against Democrat Creigh Deeds.
Allen faces a crowded for the Republican primary next June. Giuliani said Democrats are working to defeat Allen by “running their hand-picked candidate, Tim Kaine, against him with all kinds of money, all kinds of special interest support.’’
