Ken Cuccinelli loses his chief deputy at AG’s office

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) is losing his second-in-command.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Chuck James will leave the attorney general’s office to return to Williams Mullen this summer. Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge Patricia West will take his place.

“I knew from the day I hired him that he would only be here for a short time,’’ Cuccinelli said in a statement. “Because of his love for his commonwealth and his sense of duty to her people, he agreed to come on board to help me run the office, but with the understanding that it would be a temporary role for him.”

West was elected to the Circuit Court in 2000. Before that, she served as a juvenile and domestic relations judge and as director of the Department of Juvenile Justice and secretary of public safety for then governor George Allen (R). She also served as assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Virginia Beach and deputy commonwealth’s attorney in Norfolk.
