The issue of eminent domain is a hot topic in Virginia this fall, thanks to a referendum that will be on the Nov. 6 ballot asking voters to approve a constitutional amendment that would prohibit government seizing property to spur economic development or job creation.
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli will lead a panel discussion Thursday at Alexandria’s Old Dominion Boat Club to discuss the legal and political forces that will affect property rights in Virginia. Joining him will be Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University.
The location is apt; boat club members have argued that the city of Alexandria intends to seize their property by eminent domain in order to redevelop the Potomac River waterfront. The city denies this, but the city attorney did mention that possibility in the past.
The event, at the ODBC clubhouse the foot of King Street, starts at 6:30 p.m.
