Jerry Kilgore, former attorney general and gubernatorial Republican candidate, will chair Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s presidential campaign in Virginia.
Kilgore said in an interview Wednesday that he chose to back Perry because of his record on job creation in Texas, where Perry has been governor for than a decade.
“I do think voters are looking for an outsider to Washington,’’ Kilgore said.
Kilgore arranged for Perry to meet prominent Virginians at his office or McGuire Woods law and lobbying firm when the governor was in Richmond last month for a fundraiser for the state party.
Kilgore said an official announcement would be made in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, College Republicans and others are helping collect thousands of signatures Perry needs by December to get on the ballot. Volunteers will be collecting signatures at next Tuesday’s legislative election.
Kilgore previously backed Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty until Pawlenty dropped out of the race earlier this year. He co-chaired Sen. John McCain’s presidential race in Virginia in 2008.
