Kondratick accuses Ramadan of wanting to investigate miscarriages

You can tell the election is near when the races go negative. And we mean negative.

In a newly created House district in Northern Virginia, Democrat Mike Kondratick is accusing Republican David Ramadan of wanting police to investigate women who have miscarriages.

“David Ramadan is part of the radical fringe that wants big government to tell women how to live their lives,’’ the mailers from the Kondratick campaign say.

The issue has come up in the form of a bill in a previous legislative session. In 2005, a bill that failed to pass would have made it a woman’s responsibility to report a fetal death to law enforcement officials within 12 hours of delivery.

But neither Ramadan or Kondratick have served in the General Assembly. So where did it come from?

Ramadan said Kondratick is characterizing his position on abortion — he is anti-abortion rights — to mean he would support the bill, which Ramadan says he has never read. He is asking his opponent to denounce the mailer.

“It’s an overcharacterization of the pro-life position,’’ he said. “It’s disgusting. It’s over the top.”

Kondratick did not return a call for comment.
