Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) appointed someone new to the board overseeing Metro’s Silver Line rail extension Friday, one day after he removed a labor leader from the post.

Caren Merrick of McLean will take over for Dennis Martire, who had been one of Virginia’s representatives on the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board.
Martire, who filed a lawsuit Thursday over his removal, had clashed with McDonnell over incorporating a union-friendly project labor agreement into the second phase of the Silver Line project. He had also drawn criticism for overseas travel expenses, including a $9,000 trip to Prague to attend a transportation conference
The governor has been seeking greater influence with the airports authority. Pushing out Martire, an appointee of former governor Timothy M. Kaine (D), allowed McDonnell to install Merrick, a businesswoman who ran unsuccessfully for the state Senate.
