National GOP group donates more money to Virginia candidates

Less than two weeks before Election Day, the Republican State Leadership Committee, a national group that works for the election of Republican legislators and officials, contributed another $225,000 Friday to Virginia candidates, according to the State Board of Elections.

The group donated $550,000 just two days ago, bringing its total this year to the Republican Party of Virginia $1.425 million. That makes it one of the biggest donors to Republican candidates in the state in years.

The group, headed by former Republican National Committee chairman and Gov. Bob McDonnell’s campaign chairman Ed Gillespie, looks to elect Republican lawmakers, attorney generals and lieutenant governors nationwide.

Republicans are working aggressively to take back the state Senate in Virginia, one of four states with legislative elections this year. They are ahead in fundraising in large part because of the RSLC and McDonnell.
