Another day, another key conservative endorsement for George Allen’s Senate bid.
On Wednesday, the American Conservative Union announced it was backing Allen, who faces three opponents in the June 12 Republican primary, with the winner to face former governor Timothy M. Kaine (D) in November. On Thursday, it was the National Rifle Association’s turn.
“George Allen is committed to protecting our Second Amendment freedoms and hunting heritage,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of the NRA’s Political Victory Fund, which is headquartered in Fairfax. “Because of his proven record of support of our right to keep and bear arms, George Allen has earned an “A” rating and endorsement from the NRA-PVF.”
Both the ACU and NRA endorsements come in the wake of a new Washington Post poll showing Allen with a big lead in the GOP primary, garnering 62 percent of the vote in a matchup against Del. Robert Marshall (Prince William), former Virginia Tea Party Patriots head Jamie Radtke and Chesapeake minister E.W. Jackson.
The four Republicans are scheduled to hold their second primary debate Friday in Virginia Beach.
