Obama taps Virginian to be campaign co-chair

President Obama’s campaign released a list of 35 national co-chairs Wednesday morning, including one Virginian:

Volunteer Sai Iyer, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, made the list among governors (Mass Gov. Deval Patrick), friends (Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel) and Hollywood celebrities (Eva Longoria).

The campaign has been paying close attention to the swing state of Virginia as Obama looks to repeat his success in 2008 when he became the first Democrat to win the state in more than four decades.

The campaign calls the co-chairs ambassadors for Obama, who will advise the campaign on key issues and help mobilize voters in the 50 states.

“Our national co-chairs’ varied backgrounds and experiences will prove invaluable as they connect with the President’s supporters and advocate on his behalf on the campaign trail,’’ said Jim Messina, Obama’s campaign manager. “They are proud of the President’s record and leadership in rebuilding the economy after the worst economic crisis in generations and helping restore security to middle-class families.”
