U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Gov. Robert F. McDonnell will hold a town hall meeting in Richmond Wednesday to talk up tourism and travel as a way to create jobs.
But we’d guessed they might talk about offshore drilling.
McDonnell (R), who has made offshore drilling one of his administration’s top priorities, just may lobby the secretary on the Obama administration’s failure to allow offshore drilling off Virginia’s coast.
President Obama previously announced that companies could start bidding on contracts to conduct exploratory drilling in Virginia’s waters, but changed course after the 2010 exploratory well explosion last year.
Sens. Mark R. Warner and Jim Webb, both Democrats, are none too pleased either. They introduced a bill that would allow oil and natural gas drilling off the state’s coast.
After the town hall, Salazar, National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis and McDonnell will make an announcement about the Richmond National Battlefield Park.
