Tim Kaine warns against ‘swiftboat’operative Chris LaCivita to raise money for Senate campaign

U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine apparently has an enemy besides George Allen.

In multiple recent fundraising e-mails, the former Democratic governor is warning against Chris LaCivita, a Virginia GOP strategist who is best known as an adviser to the Swift Boat Veterans who targeted John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004.

Kaine’s campaign on Thursday sent the third e-mail about LaCivita in four days. It even bore Kerry’s signature.

“Now I finally get the respect I deserve,’’ LaCivita quipped. “I got John Kerry.’’

The senator from Massachusetts writes that he is well familiar with his LaCivita’s tactics.

“This year, LaCivita has set his sights on Governor Tim Kaine,’’ he writes. “I know firsthand how important it is to have the financial resources to take on LaCivita's venomous attacks -- and respond to them immediately and forcefully.”

LaCivita has worked for Allen, the former senator and governor who will likely become the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate, in past years. He does not work for him this year, though he remains a longtime consultant for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

“The cheap bums won’t even give me a percentage of what he’s raised,’’ LaCivita joked.
