Voters are heading to the polls in state legislative and local races in Virginia — one of a handful of states across the nation holding elections Tuesday. Turnout is expected to be low, but the stakes are high.
In the commonwealth, all 140 General Assembly seats are up for election in a redistricting year. Republicans are trying to win back control of the state Senate, where Democrats hold a slim 22 to 18 majority.
Legislative races to watch include the contest for a Senate seat between former state legislator Dick Black — known as one of the conservative voices in state politics — and Democrat Shawn Mitchell. Both are vying for a new district that includes Loudoun and Prince William counties.
In the 34th House District, which stretches from McLean to Sterling, Del. Barbara Comstock (R) and Democrat Pamela Danner differ on what Northern Virginia voters want. Danner has been critical about what she calls the lack of bipartisanship in Richmond — but Comstock maintains that her opponent is overstating squabbles over issues that affect the state.
Locally, issues of growth and density have dominated races in Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William and Fairfax counties. The school board contest in Fairfax, where a group of insurgent candidates could take control of the region’s largest schools system, has drawn lots of the attention.
