Virginia safety chiefs tour tornado-damaged cities

Virginia’s top public safety officials planned to tour the tornado-damaged cities of Hampton and Petersburg on Monday.


Queen Street in Alexandria was blocked by a downed tree. (John McDonnell - The Washington Post) Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker and Michael Cline, state coordinator of emergency management, will meet with local officials and view damage from Friday’s tornadoes.

A total of 500 homes, apartments and businesses were damaged in Hampton, where a twister touched down about 7:08 p.m. Friday, and Petersburg, which was struck about 8:13 p.m. Minor injuries were reported.
