House of the Week | A Contemporary Bethesda home for $5.9 million

This week’s featured home in Bethesda has plenty to recommend it:

●A wall of windows that showcases a view that’s rare on the Maryland side of the Potomac River.

●A cantilevered salt-water lap pool.

●Radiant-heated terrazzo floors.

●iPod docking stations that connect to a sound system that runs throughout the house.

●A walk-in closet in the master suite with a television, washer and dryer.

●A stainless steel staircase.

●An elevator that leads to a fourth-floor roof deck.

●Exterior lighting that basks the home in a warm glow at night.

But the piece de resistance is the master bath, which is more bathing bower than traditional bathroom. Local architect Robert M. Gurney nestled a freestanding tub next to a double-height window wall so that bathers can wallow in bubbles and leaves. For those who tire of the view, there’s a television mounted above a fireplace that serves both the master bedroom and bathroom.

The AIA-award winning Contemporary home, which sits tucked away in the woods overlooking the Potomac, was built in 2007.

“The materials used in the construction are quite different than what we’re used to seeing in residential construction,” said listing broker Anne Killeen of Washington Fine Properties. “The quality of it is so far above what we normally see. The design of it is just exceptional.”

On the main floor, nothing is allowed to obstruct the view. The kitchen is practically hidden.

“You can’t even see the appliances,” Killeen said. “And yet there’s tons of storage.”

In addition to the main house, there’s a three-car garage with a guesthouse large enough to fit a small business, for those who want to work at home but not in the home.

The four-bedroom house is on the market for $5.9 million.
