What you can buy for $500,000 in the Washington metro area

This is the first of what we hope will become a regular feature on the Where We Live blog. We know a lot of you out there are thinking about buying a home and wondering what you’ll get for your money.

To give you an idea of what kinds of properties are out there, we are going to select a variety of homes for sale inside and outside the Beltway at a specific price range.

This week, we asked some local real estate agents to send us photos from their listings at the $500,000 price point.

As expected, $500,000 buys a range of properties — depending on where you live. We found spacious homes in Dumfries and Waldorf, a newly renovated rowhouse in Northeast Washington and a penthouse condo in Arlington.

We are going to look at different price points in the coming weeks, anywhere from $200,000 to $2.5 million and beyond. We hope this helps you better gauge what you can afford as well as what matters most to you when buying a home. Is it worth the long commute to get more of a back yard? Or is convenience more important than a bigger bedroom?

If you are a real estate agent and would like your listing considered in the future, please follow us on Twitter (@postrealestate). We will do call outs for properties in the coming weeks.
