House of the Week | Former schoolhouse may appeal to students of history

More than a century ago, this Garrett Park property used to be a one-room school, filled with students likely between the first and eighth grades.

Today, the house’s current living room, dining room, entry foyer and one bedroom all occupy what was once the Garrett Park’s public school’s classroom.

Built in 1893, the schoolhouse remained intact until the 1930s, when it was turned into a residence — the owners added a kitchen, a fireplace, and more closet space. An addition containing three more bedrooms and two full bathrooms was constructed in the mid 1950s. The school’s cellar was transformed into a recreational room and utility area.

Many of the schoolhouse’s historic elements are maintained — the original 11-foot-9-inch ceilings and roof from the classroom, an attic, two front windows and possibly the light fixtures, said Beth Irons, owner and broker at Green Sail Realty and the house’s listing agent. Closets in the 1950s addition still contain the original wallpaper.

“There’s a patina of uniqueness attached to a historic property — you can go in and see these are the two original windows from 1893 with the wavy glass in them, and there are still holes on the floors where the school children’s desks were attached to the floor. There are just more interesting elements than a more recent subdivision style house, ” she said. “Some people are attracted to that uniqueness, others aren’t.”

While the home’s past might draw history enthusiasts, it could require some work from future owners to bring it to modern standards, especially the bathroom and kitchen, Irons said. “It’s pretty much original from the 1950s,” she said, noting that there have only been two owners since 1893.

The house’s screened porch overlooks the property’s 27,960-square-foot lot, part of which is covered by an open-space conservation easement from the Garrett Park Conservation Trust, preventing development to the front and sides of the property. The house sits on the corner of the lot, “so you actually have a very usable side and front yard,” Irons said.

Located on Kenilworth Avenue — the longest street in Garrett Park — it is roughly a 10-minute walk from the Grosvenor-Srathmore Metro station on the Red Line.

The house is listed for $695,000, with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
