Town Square | New York style comes to D.C.’s West End

August 5, 2013

Hartness Vision

Ever admired the cast iron canopy that graces the entrance to New York’s flagship Saks Fifth Avenue store at Rockefeller Center?

A similar canopy, with ornaments cast by the same company as the department store, will frame the front door of the Bond, a newly renovated apartment building at 1230 New Hampshire Ave. NW.

In addition to replicating the New York style, the building brings Big Apple-sized apartments to the District. The homes range from 350 to 700 square feet, with preoccupancy rents listed on the Web site starting at $2,150 for a studio and rising to $3,750 for the largest two-bedroom, two-bathroom units.

Aria Development Group, based in New York City, recently spent $10 million to renovate the former corporate housing building for the IMF. The building’s historic details have been restored, while the interior has been gutted and recreated into 83 studio and one- and two-bedroom units. The development team donated fixtures and appliances from the original building to local charitable organizations such as Community Forklift, Champlain Court Cooperative, the Latin American Youth Center and Sarah’s Circle.

An English garden has been designed for the front of the building, while a courtyard with private gardens is available to residents.

The apartments are the first in the city to offer “Nest” thermostats, which can be controlled remotely by an iPhone and can learn the typical temperature preferences of residents, officials say. In addition, each home features natural white oak flooring, upscale washers and dryers, contemporary European-style kitchens and all new systems, including a video intercom.

The building, which is in the West End, is within walking distance of Georgetown, Washington Circle, Dupont Circle and downtown’s Golden Triangle as well as both the Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle Metro stations. For leasing information, call (202) 808-9680 or visit www.theBondDC.com.

Arts at the old Spanish ambassador’s manse

For more than 70 years, ambassadors to the United States from Spain resided at 2801 16th St. NW, a mansion designed by George Oakley Totten in 1922. Now it will be used as a public space for exhibitions.

When first built, the residence was offered to the U.S. government for the vice president’s residence, but Congress turned it down because of concerns about maintenance costs.

Now the Embassy of Spain and the Spain-USA Foundation have completed a renovation, converting the building into an event and exhibition venue to showcase cultural events, lectures, visual art, films and design shows related to Spanish culture.

The current exhibition, curated by architect and interior designer Juli Capella, displays innovative designs of Spanish commercial office furniture and lighting.
