Organizers of DC Design House, an annual fundraiser for Children’s National Health System, announced that a stately home at 4600 Linnean Ave. in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Northwest Washington will be the site for its 2014 fundraiser.
The stone house has three levels and about 7,929 square feet of living space which will be transformed into a show house by 24 local interior designers.
The 2014 DC Design House was donated by Suzi Wilczynski, granddaughter of Marshall B. Coyne, the founder of the Madison Hotel.
The residence has been in the Coyne family for more than six decades. Wilczynski says she was happy to donate the home to the DC Design House because her grandfather hosted the 1989 National Symphony Orchestra Show House at his home on 30th Street NW and the family was thrilled with the transformation of the house by local designers.
Built in 1929, the Linnean Avenue home has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, a three-car garage and a swimming pool on two-thirds of an acre. Original elements in the home include crown moldings, wood flooring and custom cabinets in the living room and dining room.
The DC Design House fundraiser was established in 2008 by Skip and Debbie Singleton, principals of DC Living Real Estate LLC in partnership with an all-volunteer staff. The Design House has raised more than $1 million for Children’s over the past six years.
The home will be open to the public for a “Bare Bones” tour before the designers do their work on Feb. 15 and then open every day except Mondays between April 13 and May 11. Tickets are priced at $25. For more information visit www.dcdesignhouse.com.
Industrial-style apartments coming to Shaw
A mixed-use development with a modern industrial vibe is under development by the JBG Companies along Florida Avenue NW in Shaw. Known as The Shay, this 245-unit apartment community will be split between two buildings on the east and west sides of 8th Street NW.
The Miller Hull Partnership of Seattle, Wash., and the BKV Group, which has an office in Georgetown, teamed to design The Shay. The building will have exposed concrete, expansive glass window walls and industrial detailing as well as 28,000 square feet of retail space.
JBG plans to bring in one-of-a-kind independent retailers into the space, including coffee houses, art galleries, bakeries, art studios and sandwich shops. Local Realtor to star in HGTV episode
Sometime this month or in February, HGTV’s “Rent or Buy” will air an episode featuring Lisa Kittleman, a 24-year-old buyer’s agent with the Kittleman Group for Keller Williams Select Realtors in Howard County.
In the episode, shot last fall, Kittleman shows two rentals and two homes for sale to an active duty military family who had been transferred to Fort Meade. The show helps families see the pros and cons of each option. Kettleman spent three days shooting the episode.
“HGTV was looking for someone in Howard County and discovered the Kittleman Group because we have so many five-star reviews on Zillow,” says Kittleman, who can’t discuss the family’s decision until the show airs. “I would love to do this again — it was so much fun, especially to get to spend more time with the clients.”
“The biggest challenge was showing the homes while being on camera,” adds Kittleman. “We had to stop a lot for the camera angles to be adjusted and to get different shots.”
Kittleman says would-be buyers need to think about how long they’ll stay in the area; whether they have cash for a down payment and make a careful comparison of the financial cost of renting and buying.
The Kittleman Group was founded by Kittleman’s parents, Laura Kittleman and Tom Yeatts, in 2004.
