House of the Week | Alexandria brownstone for $2.55M

Over the years, the house on Prince Street in Old Town Alexandria has undergone many renovations. HGTV’s “Old Homes Restored” documented one of its transformations. Fortunately, each alteration has strived to maintain the home’s historic charms while bringing it into the modern era. The result adroitly combines the past with the present.

“Each owner has added something to the house and made it more special than it was,” said Sue Goodhart of McEnearney Associates. Goodhart and Babs Beckwith are the listing agents for the home.

The mahogany front door with its etched glass and transom provide an elegant entrance to the circa 1860 brownstone. Ornate wallpaper on the ceiling and an antique chandelier draw your eyes upward as you step into the foyer.

The original heart pine flooring has been preserved throughout the house. Skylights drench the graceful curved staircase in natural light. Oversize pocket doors open to a formal living room with 10-foot ceilings, beaded molding, a ceiling medallion, a period light fixture and a fireplace with a carved mantle.

A crystal chandelier shimmers above the center hall. The elevator that reaches all four floors is tucked discretely behind a door in the hall. An arch above the doorway is one of the many clever architectural details in this home.

The formal dining room has a Baccarat crystal chandelier, a fireplace and built-in glass-front cabinets to display china. The kitchen is modern and efficient with a six-burner range and breakfast bar.

The home has not one, but two master suites — each with its own balcony. The second-floor master suite has a box bay window and fireplace, while the top floor master suite has a charming alcove for the bed and a skylight.

Exposed brick and wooden beams give the lower level a rustic, hunting lodge feel. In contrast, the home theater with its slick entertainment system, massive screen and oversize leather recliners is all Hollywood.

A brick wall surrounds the backyard patio, offering an oasis of calm and a perfect spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee.

The 5,115-square-foot home is listed at $2.55 million.
