Town Square | Ritz-Carlton condo is green

February 10

(HomeVisit)

The phrase “reclaimed barn wood” and the Ritz-Carlton don’t seem to belong together, but the architects and interior designers who collaborated on Unit 5F in the West End Residences at the Ritz-Carlton at 1111 23rd St. NW didn’t let that stop them from creating a unique home.

Listed for sale at $3.25 million, this 3,250-square-foot unit has reclaimed barn wood flooring purposely left rough and painted white throughout the home to add what designer Darryl Carter called a “graceful yet casual base” to the condo. The open loft-style layout includes sliding wall panels made of raw porcelain by artist Margaret Boozer that can be used to separate the dining room and formal living room from the family room, kitchen and bedrooms.

The unit — one of the largest in the building — has three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, two balconies and two garage parking spaces. The master bedroom has a private balcony, a sitting area with floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding walls of storage shelves. The master bathroom has extensive stonework, and the two additional bedrooms each have a marble bathroom and custom-built floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

Win a home visit from ‘Ask the Builder’ columnist

Do you have a modest DIY project that you can’t seem to figure out on your own? Here’s your chance to win an in-home visit and a little help from Ask the Builder columnist Tim Carter.

The contest consists of an online game that is a modern-day version of an old-fashioned Treasure Hunt. Beginning Feb. 18, you can join a free, three-week game of following clues and visiting Web sites looking for answers to simple questions posed by Carter. The contest is open to both homeowners and renters.

To get started, visit www.askthebuilder.com and sign up for the free newsletter. The game will start with a small snippet of a large photo and a short list of Web pages to visit to find the large version of the photo.

Once you reach that page, you’ll have to study it to find the answers to simple questions. Players will be given Treasure Hunt “Sailing Instructions” on random days for 21 days after the Feb. 18 starting date. Prizes, including power tools and other products for your home as well as the grand prize visit by Carter, will be awarded to randomly chosen people from the pool of participants who answer the questions correctly.

Rentals to join retail in revitalized section of Wheaton

Leasing has begun at Solaire Wheaton, a 232-unit apartment building at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Veirs Mill Road, two blocks from the Wheaton Metro station on the Red Line and within walking distance of the Westfield Wheaton Mall.

Washington Property Company started planning for the building, constructed on the former First Baptist Church site, eight years ago as part of the revitalization of Wheaton. The area has a new Safeway, a new Costco and myriad ethnic restaurants as well as easy access to downtown Washington.

Studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments are available with rents ranging from $1,575 to $3,075. The apartments have granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, wood flooring, large windows, private balconies and energy-efficient features.

The building has more than 7,000 square feet of amenity space, including a swimming pool and deck with a grilling area, a fitness center, a cyber café with free Wi-Fi and underground parking. The building also has a residents’ lounge with a demonstration kitchen, a video gaming area, a flat-panel TV and an indoor-outdoor fireplace.

Pictures worth a thousand words — or at least one apartment

If you think searching for an apartment in the D.C. area is tough and you’re tired of scrolling through apartment listings, you may want to try RadPad. Available as a Web site and an app, RadPad combines the volume of listings that you’ll find on Craigslist with the visual appeal of Instagram.

This photo-based site is designed to help you find an apartment faster and connect with the landlord, too, via a “quick message” feature. You can refine your search by area, price range, number of bedrooms and bathrooms and whether you want an apartment or a house.

According to RadPad’s data, 41 percent of D.C. residents live in an apartment. The average rents for a one- or two-bedroom apartment range from $2,539 to $3,515.

The free app is available on iOS and can be accessed through iTunes. You can also access RadPad through the Web at www.onradpad.com.
