House of the Week | English Norman manor in Annapolis for $6.25M

Tucked onto a peninsula guarded by the Chesapeake Bay and Burley Creek, this nine-acre gated estate offers amenities comparable to a resort.

This being Annapolis, boating is one of the favorite pastimes of residents, and this property encourages water activities. The private dock on the Burley Creek side, is a protected pier with more than eight feet of water depth — ideal for power and sail boats.

For those who prefer land over sea, the equestrian facilities include a fully equipped stable with five stalls for horses and one for a pony, plus an outdoor exercise arena and riding trails.

A lighted tennis court and outdoor pool round out the outdoor pleasures on this secluded estate.

Indoors, there is a fitness room and, for those less inclined to physical exertion, a home theater.

Built in 1916 and later expanded by the current owner, the English Norman manor house is a spacious 8,641 square feet for grand entertaining. The stately dining room with its herringbone oak floor can seat up to 30 guests. The fireplace’s limestone mantel with its two elephant heads was installed by Cathedral Stone and weighs 10 tons. Each elephant head weighs a ton.

A mural by former Baltimore artist Joseph Sheppard graces the billiard room. The floor in the room is made from a rare African wood.

Added in the 1980s, the glass-enclosed atrium offers a place to gaze at the water protected from the elements. Another place to contemplate the bay is from the master bedroom, where floor-to-ceiling windows encircle the room.

A one-bedroom cottage is available for overnight guests. A two-bedroom carriage house is above the garage.

The property is listed at $6.25 million.
