A condo in Silver Spring could be ideal for someone looking for a space with contemporary features and an interesting back story.

The unit at 9610 Dewitt Drive, No. SH202, is part of what once was a finishing school for young women which later became an Army rehabilitation center.

The condo, part of the National Park Seminary community redeveloped by EYA, has a snazzy kitchen and modern baths, as well as a wide front porch, arched interior doorways and a beamed ceiling. The condo was created through the restoration and conversion of one of the buildings belonging to the finishing school for young women established in 1894.

National Park Seminary became a college in the 1930s and then was sold to the U.S. Army during World War II. It was annexed to the Walter Reed Army Hospital and served as a rehabilitation and convalescent center for wounded soldiers from World War II through the Vietnam War and later for research and administrative purposes. The Maryland Historic Trust stepped in to protect the historic buildings on the property and it was listed in 1972 on the National Register of Historic Places as the National Park Seminary Historic District.

The condo, listed at $649,000, has 2,098 square feet on two levels, three bedrooms, two baths and a loft-like floor plan with period details. The porch has space for dining and entertaining, a kitchen with a breakfast nook that opens to the dining room, a living room and a first-floor master bedroom suite. The lower level has two more bedrooms, a full bath and a den.

One of ‘Three Sisters’ homes in Chevy Chase listed for sale

Three Colonial revival style homes in Chevy Chase, Md., built adjacent to each other in 1899 have been affectionately called the “Three Sisters” by neighbors for decades.

Owners Michael Shulman and Jackie Judd have enjoyed their historic home for 21 years but now the couple is ready to downsize.

Their home, at 3708 Thornapple St., will be listed for sale at $2.395 million.

“This home was originally a grand summer house for people who wanted to escape the hot weather in downtown D.C.,” says Shulman. “It was so well-built that we still have the original roof and we’re told our front windows and banisters are original, too.”

Judd says they’ll miss the home where they raised their twin boys, but that the 3,800- square-foot home and 9,400-square-foot lot is too much space for the couple. The home has five bedrooms, an office and a swimming pool.

“We renovated the home in the late ’90s to make it easier for entertaining, but we’ve kept as much as we can of the original details and features,” says Judd.

Glass tower begins ascent in Rosslyn

While it will be years before the residential component is complete at Central Place, JBG Companies broke ground last month on the 31-story mixed-use development above the Rosslyn Metro station.

The glass residential tower, to be eventually paired with glass office tower, will have 377 apartments on 24 floors with residents expected to move in sometime in 2017.

The residential portion of Central Place is a joint venture between The JBG Companies and the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio. Central Place will be a nearly 1 million square foot development with 25,000 square feet of retail space and a 17,000-square-foot public plaza with outdoor seating, a fountain and space for outdoor restaurant seats.

The first step of the project was the removal of sky bridges that provided Metro access to open up the plaza and create a community space in center of Rosslyn.
